Exquisite Potential: Surviving the 21st Century through Surreal Metamorphosis

Deadline for entry: February 1st, 2026.
ELIGIBILITY: Open to womxn and non-binary artists. Submitted artwork must have been executed in the last 2 years and must be available for the duration of the exhibit. Only 20 artists will be selected through the open call. Selected artists will receive a $200 honorarium.

Participating artists are asked to submit their artwork in exploration and conversation with this theme:
Metamorphosis in this context refers not to a strictly biological process but to a boundless, enchanted form of transformation that can reshape people, animals, objects, and places. It dissolves the line between the real and the imagined, revealing how identities and experiences can merge into hybrid, shifting forms. This idea draws heavily from the Surrealists of the 1920s and 1930s, who used metamorphosis as a tool of collective mythmaking to resist rising fascism and the legacies of imperialism. Through uncanny imagery, they explored states of in- betweenness, rejecting rational order and embracing the unconscious and the irrational as pathways to alternative modes of existence.
A century later, the concept of metamorphosis offers renewed strategies for confronting contemporary authoritarianism and global human-rights violations— including assaults on reproductive and gender-affirming care, the dismantling of immigration protections, the rollback of climate initiatives, and participation in genocide. Revisiting this surreal mode of transformation allows for a reimagining of reality in which form, time, and space remain fluid and unbounded. By rendering the familiar strange or the grotesque beautiful, metamorphosis empowers individuals and communities to resist imposed binaries and to shape their own modes of being in an ever-changing world.
Exquisite Potential: Surviving the 21st Century through Surreal Metamorphosis seeks entries in all types of media by women and non-binary identifying artists who wish to challenge oppressive realities and seek emancipatory sights, sounds, and spaces that emerge anew.
About the curator:
Ariana Torres is a San Diego-based curator and arts administrator. Torres currently serves as the Assistant Curator at Mingei International Museum and volunteers as a Programming Lead with San Diego Filipino Cinema, an organization promoting Filipino/a/x diaspora stories in film. Her educational background includes BA in Studio Art from San Diego State University and an MA in Art History from the University of York, UK where she researched themes of ritual, enchantment, and the surreal within material culture and Modern and Contemporary art.

En este contexto, la metamorfosis no se refiere a un proceso estrictamente biológico, sino a una forma de transformación ilimitada y mágica que puede remodelar personas, animales, objetos y lugares. Disuelve la frontera entre lo real y lo imaginario, revelando cómo las identidades y las experiencias pueden fusionarse en formas híbridas y cambiantes. Esta idea se inspira profundamente en los surrealistas de las décadas de 1920 y 1930, quienes utilizaron la metamorfosis como herramienta de creación de mitos colectivos para resistir el auge del fascismo y el legado del imperialismo. A través de imágenes inquietantes, exploraron estados intermedios, rechazando el orden racional y abrazando el inconsciente y lo irracional como caminos hacia modos de existencia alternativos.
Un siglo después, el concepto de metamorfosis ofrece nuevas estrategias para enfrentar el autoritarismo contemporáneo y las violaciones globales de los derechos humanos, incluyendo los ataques a la salud reproductiva y la atención médica de afirmación de género, el desmantelamiento de las protecciones para inmigrantes, el retroceso en las iniciativas climáticas y la participación en genocidios. Retomar este modo surrealista de transformación permite reimaginar la realidad en la que la forma, el tiempo y el espacio permanecen fluidos e ilimitados. Acerca de la curadora:
Ariana Torres es curadora y gestora cultural con sede en San Diego. Actualmente, trabaja como curadora asistente en el Museo Internacional Mingei y colabora como responsable de programación en San Diego Filipino Cinema, una organización que promueve las historias de la diáspora filipina a través del cine. Es licenciada en Bellas Artes por la Universidad Estatal de San Diego y tiene una maestría en Historia del Arte por la Universidad de York, Reino Unido, donde investigó temas de ritual, encantamiento y surrealismo en la cultura material y el arte moderno y contemporáneo.
