Our education program, titled New Native Narratives, aimed to challenge existing narratives of our communities through art making and critical thinking. It invited artists, their mentors, and the public, to have conversations about who we are as a community.
We invited several artists, curators, and scholars from the region to work with young, emerging artists. Through open calls to the artist communities of San Diego and Tijuana, a total of 10 local artists were selected to participate and recieve an intensive, paid apprenticeship where they learned the necessary skills to develop a project. Each artist was mentored in every technical and conceptual part of their art making process, from their initial concept to a fully realized piece of art.
The final pieces were exhibited at The FRONT’s main gallery in the Summer of 2022. The exhibition, along with all its pieces, then traveled to the Bonita Museum in Chula Vista, Ca, for a short, final showing in the Fall.
The programs’ instructors and mentors were established and experienced artists, and included Francisco Eme, Sara Solaimani, Mely Barragan, Andrea Chung, and Carlos Castro.
