OUR ANCESTOR’S DREAM
Life between three worlds
On October 6th, 2022, Casa Familiar + The FRONT opened the exhibition Our Ancestor’s Dream: Life between three worlds.
Curated by Karla Garcia-Perez – curator, community organizer, and student of Legal Studies of Indigenous People’s Law Program at the University of Oklahoma – the exhibition includes artworks by artists from California and Baja California, Mexico, which includes: Johnny Contreras, Cristy Gomez, Eva Salazar, Raymundo Marquez, Jorge Sanchez Navarro, Guillermo Garcia, Israel Esparza Dominguez, Yinna Lila Munoz, Fox Maxy, Weshoyot Alvitre, Derrick Herrera, Juan A. Reynoso.
As described by Karla Garcia-Perez:
«The Kumeyaay people have lived on this land since time immemorial. Our story is vast, complex, resilient, and never-ending. We are artists, singers, dancers, filmmakers, organizers, advocates, educators, and keepers of our culture. Our stories have been passed down for more than 60 generations on this land, much has been lost but so much has remained. Beyond what we have kept for 12,000 years, today we create new stories, grow as a community, and instill who we are in the next generation of indigenous youth.
Our tribe pre-dates the United States, Mexico, and the U.S./Mexican border. Yet we are divided by these nations and European-American-made walls. Families have been divided, a tribe cut in half, and our way of life was forever changed. Yet we are still here, on both sides of the border, each person, each family, band, community, and ejido, holds a different piece of our story. Today we will show you some of the pieces that we have in hopes that you may see us and that you may listen.»

Como lo describe Karla García-Pérez:
«El pueblo Kumeyaay ha vivido en esta tierra desde tiempos inmemoriales. Nuestra historia es vasta, compleja, resistente e interminable. Somos artistas, cantantes, bailarines, cineastas, organizadores, defensores, educadores y guardianes de nuestra cultura. Nuestro Las historias se han transmitido durante más de 60 generaciones en esta tierra, mucho se ha perdido pero mucho ha quedado, más allá de lo que hemos guardado durante 12,000 años, hoy creamos nuevas historias, crecemos como comunidad e inculcamos lo que somos. la próxima generación de jóvenes indígenas.
Nuestra tribu es anterior a los Estados Unidos, México y la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Sin embargo, estamos divididos por estas naciones y los muros europeos-estadounidenses. Las familias se dividieron, una tribu se dividió por la mitad y nuestra forma de vida cambió para siempre. Sin embargo, todavía estamos aquí, en ambos lados de la frontera, cada persona, cada familia, banda, comunidad y ejido, tiene una parte diferente de nuestra historia. Hoy les mostraremos algunas de las piezas que tenemos con la esperanza de que nos vean y escuchen».
