The FRONT Gallery
The Front Gallery was a vibrant showcase of San Ysidro Middle School students’ diverse talents. It featured projects from the Art, Computer Science, Journalism, and Social Studies elective classes, demonstrating the school’s commitment to providing a comprehensive education.
The artwork created by students in the Art elective includes Op Art paintings and other pieces that utilize visual perception techniques. These works manipulate perspective to create the illusion of three-dimensional space and use color mixing to convey the impression of light and shadow.
Students in the Journalism and Computer Science electives put their technical skills to the test by creating digital images using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). This tool, which allows for image editing, creation, and manipulation, is a testament to their practical application of learning. They combine their original photographs with online stock images to develop various projects, including surreal images, digital murals, virtual collages, and product photography.
As part of the 7th-grade California social studies curriculum, students delve into the fascinating world of African masks within the broader context of global cultures and art. At San Ysidro Middle School, they learn about different cultures that create and use masks and how these traditions connect to beliefs, rituals, and social interactions. They also develop critical thinking skills by analyzing the historical and cultural significance of these artifacts. The students’ creativity shines as they craft African masks using environmental and household items, a testament to their ingenuity and resourcefulness.
