La Tierra es Testigo / The Land is Witness

This time Natalia Ventura and Leslye Villaseñor showed their work as part of the Artists At Work fellowship.

Natalia and Leslye worked with Casa Familiar and social impact organizations in one of the four regional cultural hubs in the Borderlands region (South California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas). Artists At Work (AAW) is administered by THE OFFICE Performing arts + film with generous support of the Mellon Foundation. Thanks to the amazing AAW Administrative fellow for the Borderlands Region Gabriela Yadegari.

Natalia Ventura worked on a series of acts of border resistance with Friends of Friendship Park and Leslye Villaseñor worked with San Diego Partnerships for success to lead a series of watercolor workshops for community members aimed to activate and preserve Otay Valley Regional Park.

Artists At Work (AAW) is THE OFFICE performing arts + film’s workforce resilience program in the spirit of the WPA that is designed to support communities through artistic civic engagement.

We must align ourselves with the land if we want to survive. We must not accept walls as our norm. We must imagine something different. Where death is so pervasive, we need art to help us grieve, to help us transmute our pain into power, hope, and joy. We need art to help us realize our visions for a borderless world. Where they build walls, we will make art.

Leslye Villaseñor is a visual artist based in San Diego, focusing primarily on oil painting and illustration. Through her work, she delves into the depths of human consciousness, memory, perception, and the rawness of human emotion based on her own personal experiences, direct observation, and philosophical underpinnings. Her artworks, often haunting and melancholic, aim to create a dialogue and connection with the audience by allowing them to insert themselves in familiar yet surreal or dream-like scenarios.
