Weshoyot Alvitre: A Virtual Artist Talk

Join us on Zoom on December 15th, 2022, for an artist talk with indigenous illustrator, writer, and comic book artist: Weshoyot Alvitre. We will talk about her work in and outside of her art, as well as the importance of using the indigenous voice to re-frame colonial narratives through her medium.

This artist talk is a parallel activity to our current exhibition ‘Our Ancestor’s Dream’, on view at The Front Gallery until January 7th.

This is a free, virtual event and will take place over Zoom on December 15th, 2022, beginning at 6pm.

About the Artist:

Weshoyot Alvitre was born in the Santa Monica Mountains on the property of Satwiwa, a cultural center started by her father Art Alvitre. She grew up close to the land and raised with traditional knowledge that inspires the work she does today. Weshoyot has been working in the comics medium for over 15 years. Alvitre has made a conscious choice to work primarily within Native-owned publications and educational avenues, to further support a self funded narrative on past, present and future native issues. It is through this voice, and through her artwork, she feels she is able to communicate her unique viewpoint and continue a strong dialogue on issues that are important to her as a Native woman.

Únase a nosotros por Zoom el 15 de diciembre de 2022 para una charla de artista con ilustradora, escritora y dibujante de cómics indígena: Weshoyot Alvitre. Hablaremos de su trabajo dentro y fuera de su arte, así como de la importancia de usar la voz indígena para reformular las narrativas coloniales a través de su medio.

Esta charla de artista es una actividad paralela a nuestra exposición actual ‘El Sueño de Nuestros Ancestros’, que se exhibe en The Front Gallery hasta el 7 de enero.

Sobre la Artista:

Weshoyot Alvitre nació en las montañas de Santa Mónica en la propiedad de Satwiwa, un centro cultural fundado por su padre, Art Alvitre. Creció cerca de la tierra y se crió con conocimientos tradicionales que inspiran el trabajo que hace hoy. Weshoyot ha estado trabajando en el medio de los cómics durante más de 15 años. Alvitre ha tomado la decisión consciente de trabajar principalmente con publicaciones y avenidas educativas propiedad de nativos, para apoyar aún más una narrativa autofinanciada sobre temas nativos pasados, presentes y futuros. Es a través de esta voz, ya través de su obra de arte, que siente que puede comunicar su punto de vista único y continuar un diálogo sólido sobre temas que son importantes para ella como mujer nativa.
