Exhibition Dates: 3/7/2020– 5/7/2020
ELIGIBILITY: Open to all gender artists. All nationalities. Submitted artwork must have been executed in the last 2 years and must be available for the duration of the exhibit.

THEME: insurgencies: women’s art on the border in the era of cold war
As daughters, sisters, and mothers, we women have witnessed our world taken over by tactics of cold war. In this passive-aggressive age, the global powers have recursively utilized economic and political warfare, propaganda, espionage and proxy wars to maintain the status quo of perpetual hegemony. In countries across the so-called “Third World” and the “Fourth World,” and here at the border, we witness it first hand in state-sanctioned immigration proceedings tearing apart our families, unfair labor dealings, institutional racism and sexism, and militarization and privatization of our shared spaces. Not only have we witnessed, but we have juggled our family and work obligations all while we: fought on the frontlines, marched in the demonstrations, braved the police riots, been locked up, risked our lives to speak the truth, stood arm in arm to stop the state-sanctioned destruction of our historical and cultural sites, and taught and protected our children. We’ve built community, identified the ruling class and its agents and plans, formed coalitions and alliances to intercept those plans where they interfered with the lives and well-being of our communities, and executed tactics of our own to protect and strengthen our people, the working class, and the border.
As artists, intellectuals, interlocutors, translators, writers, teachers, and curators, we have witnessed our art world take shape out of the same misogynistic primal material as every other major institution. Not only have we witnessed; we have fought to get our voices heard, to resist censorship of our content, to reach out directly to audiences wherever possible, to talk to anyone who wants to listen. Our production is in-house, on-street, and avant-garde. We move invisibly between tactical points, using our alliances to achieve our political goals, to gain ownership of the means and modes of our production. We’ve identified who sits on the Boards, where they stand politically, what they think “political art” means, who they think we are, and what they think we’re capable of achieving as women of color artists and intellectuals. We have educated the masses, revised history, and occupied the spaces of art for radical acts, all to teach us something about ourselves.
As mujeres, we come together on this Dia de la Mujer, not to celebrate ourselves, or to display our work, but to stage an insurgency from within the spaces of art to give a glimpse into how our thought and labor has shaped the world. Through their work, the artists in this Dia de la Mujer exhibition conjure uprisings, author other revolutions, and interrogate history. Bringing focused attention to the geopolitics of the México-US border here at Tijuana-San Ysidro, these local artists are not simply making art about or on a border or its history, but from within it. Each of these mujeres lives a life marked by the border, by its agents’ tactics of cold war. In response to this, their paintings, drawings, films, performances, and installations draw a map of insurgencies underway.
REQUIREMENTS:
- COMPLETED APPLICATION (by email) All fields should be filled out, and required attachments submitted with application. Each artist is limited to 1 entry. CATEGORIES: artists must select one of two categories for entry.
- Established Artist (Track record of previous exhibition, publication, articles, etc.)
- Emerging Artist (Community members with no artistic track record, under recognized artist, or artists in development).
- ATTACHMENT 1 – IMAGES – Submit a high-resolution image by email. (Minimum 1, maximum 5 images – Image resolution at least 1024 x 768 pixels); entering this competition constitutes agreement that images may be used for program or publicity purposes.
- ATTACHMENT 2 – ARTWORK & ARTIST STATEMENT – A brief statement about the work being submitted should be included as well as artist’s biographical information.
- FEE: A non-refundable entry fee of $10.00 is due by February 15, 2020, 5:00 pm.

ALL MEDIUMS ACCEPTED. This year we are encouraging artists to submit proposals in all mediums, performance art, actions or projects that could engage the community in unconventional forms & spaces during the months the exhibition is up. Interventions, concerts, performances, pop-up events, net art, will be considered as well as paintings, prints, sculpture, etc. However, the selection of such proposals will be evaluated by the curatorial committee according to their viability and production possibilities.
ENTRIES: No entries that have been in previous competitive exhibitions are eligible.
ARTWORK SUBMISSION: All accepted entries/works of art must be delivered to the exhibition address by MARCH 1, 2020. THE FRONT – 147 W San Ysidro Blvd., San Ysidro, CA 92173.
SHIPMENT OF ARTWORK. – If Artwork is to be shipped, Artist shall assume complete monetary responsibility for shipping and handling costs for their shipment to the gallery as well as their return to the Artist. Casa Familiar is not responsible for damage or loss occurring once artwork has been delivered to shipping company.
FRAMES AND MATS: All accepted artwork must be framed or otherwise professionally presented and ready for exhibition. Entries must be in finished condition for handling and display. When appropriate, works should be framed with hanging hardware included (no saw-tooth hangers) for their own protection.
PUBLIC SALES: Casa Familiar Gallery’s Commission; Terms of Payment. The Gallery shall sell the Artworks only at the Retail Price specified by the artist. The Gallery and the Artist agree that the Gallery’s commission is to be 30 percent of the Retail Price of the Artwork. Payment to the Artist shall be made by Casa Familiar at the end of the art exhibit, and will include all commissions due for any/all artworks sold. The artists may choose to designate artwork as NFS (not for sale).
ACCEPTANCE/LIABILITY: Artwork must be clearly labeled with artist name, phone number, email address, and title of work at time of drop off. The utmost care will be given to each entry received; entries are submitted at artist’s/owner’s own risk. The organizers and hosts are not responsible for the loss of or damage to works, frames, glass, or any other component of the art.
